Session I : Safety Design of Complex Buildings

Chairman : Andy Dean, Head of Façade Engineering | WSP Group

09.15 - 09.45

Andy Dean, Head of Façades | WSP - “Façade Safety – Glass Selection”

As industry expert for façade design and fire testing Andy Dean addresses some of the essential considerations related to fire and facades; including highlighting a few common industry misunderstandings. His presentation puts industry standards and codes into context by conveying four concepts and learning objectives: reaction to fire testing versus fire resistance testingthe façade context for full fire resistanceperimeter fire stopping, and reaction to fire – flame spread on facades. He will also guide the audience through a video demonstration of a large scale fire test, illustrating the remarkable difference between a fire-rated and non-fire rated material.

09.45 - 10.15

Zainul Abedeen, Principal Consultant - Fire & Life Safety | WSP - "Fire Safety Design For Malls"

Mall design to compliance with codes such as NFPA 101 allows for a flexible design which facilitates the architectural and functional intent of malls. In addition, it allows for various elements of performance based design. This presentation highlights the design fundamentals and identifies some common misinterpretations of the code.

10.15 - 10.45

Altaf Afridi, Regional Director MENA | Dorma - “Aligning Safety, Security and Aesthetics in Architectural Openings”

Architectural openings are more about Life Safety than egress and fire rating only. The automatic and manual revolving, sliding or swing door can be hazardous for users unless properly designed as per relative standards and codes. More so when we deal with frameless glass assemblies and the user group includes disabled, elderly people and children. Also, adding security hardware may cause safety issues for doors. While taking care of all these issues, the same doors are one of the main aesthetic items in architectural and interior design and a balance is always needed to align all these aspects. The presentation will focus on these points and will provide some case studies, how such challenges were resolved.

Session II : Implementation of Fire Safety Design

Chairman: Andy Dean, Head of Façade Engineering | WSP Group

11.30 - 12.00

John Noone, Associate Director | Arup Gulf Ltd. - “Fire Safety Integrated Testing & Commissioning”

The integration of a group of systems to meet the fire and life safety performance requirements of the fire strategy is an important component to successfully handing over a building. It involves a broad team to achieve this such as the fire engineer, commissioning agent, individual building system specialists, building operator to name a few. While all systems are tested in isolation there is the need to determine the correct interaction and coordination for fire safety, the presenter shall discuss this topic for modern buildings.

12.00 – 12.30

James Bychowski, Senior Vice President ME | Aon Fire Protection - “Solving the Fire Alarm Problem: Design and Commissioning of Fire Detection and Alarm Systems”

In the design and commissioning of fire alarm and detection system installations in the built environment, consideration of fundamental concepts is required to avoid nuisance alarms, yet maintain accurate notification in the event of an emergency. This presentation details critical aspects of design and installation of fire alarm systems to avoid nuisance alarms and other pitfalls in selected occupancies such as assembly, residential high-rise, and healthcare facilities.

12.30 - 13.00

Anthony R. Cole, Technical Director (Buildings and Infrastructure Division) | Aman Fire Protection Consultants - “Fire Department Access: Balancing Access with Security in Today's Environment

Fire department access is a major issue surrounding various occupancies throughout the GCC Region.  This is further complicated by increased security measures based upon regional threats and the needs to protect the buildings. We will discuss some of these challenges and code related requirements, trying to bridge the gap between accesses required for the fire department and keeping the buildings secure.
