Session I : Safety Design of Complex Buildings Chairman : Andy Dean, Head of Façade Engineering | WSP Group |
|
09.15 - 09.45 |
Dermot O’Donnell, Fire Engineer | Arup Gulf Ltd. - “Fire Engineering Design Approaches - A Consistant Level of Sophistication” This speaker presents a discussion on an approach to fire safety design, using a fire engineering framework, to identify design goals and objectives in order to arrive at a holistic and practical fire safety design solution. In certain buildings this is often the only means to achieve the design intent and client goals. |
09.45 - 10.15 |
Alexander Castellanos, Associate – Fire & Life Safety | WSP - “Fire Safety Design For Malls” Mall design to compliance with codes such as NFPA 101 allows for a flexible design which facilitates the architectural and functional intent of malls. In addition, it allows for various elements of performance based design. This presentation highlights the design fundamentals and identifies some common misinterpretations of the code. |
10.15 - 10.45 |
Shamim Rashid Sumar, Director Business Development | Aon Fire Protection - “Fire and Life Safety Aspects of Emergency Planning” Content: An overview of fire and life safety considerations in emergency planning. The presentation covers regional and international requirements for emergency planning in the codes and standards and discusses critical aspects to be addressed by the various stakeholders in building design, fire life safety systems implementation, and building operation. |

11.30 - 12.00 |
Bilal Ahmed, Projects Manager – KSA/Kuwait | DORMA Gulf Door Controls FZE - “Aligning Safety, Security and Aesthetics in Architectural Openings” Architectural openings are more about Life Safety than egress and fire rating only. The automatic and manual revolving, sliding or swing door can be hazardous for users unless properly designed as per relative standards and codes. More so when we deal with frameless glass assemblies and the user group includes disabled, elderly people and children. Also, adding security hardware may cause safety issues for doors. While taking care of all these issues, the same doors are one of the main aesthetic items in architectural and interior design and a balance is always needed to align all these aspects. The presentation will focus on these points and will provide some case studies, how such challenges were resolved. |
12.00 – 12.30 |
Andy Dean, Head of Façades | WSP - “Façade Safety – Glass Selection” Glass selection is an extremely important phase of the design process. It is actually a combination and often a balance of performance characteristics. In this presentation we will address three of the most important aspects of glass selection – fire safety, breakage and solar performance. The intention is to provide the listener with some of the key requirements and also resources pursuant to assisting them in this regard. |
