09.15 - 09.45 |
Shamim Rashid Sumar, Director Business Development | Aon Fire Protection - “Solving the Fire Alarm Problem: Design and Commissioning of Fire Detection and Alarm Systems” In the design and commissioning of fire alarm and detection system installations in the built environment, consideration of fundamental concepts is required to avoid nuisance alarms, yet maintain accurate notification in the event of an emergency. This presentation details critical aspects of design and installation of fire alarm systems to avoid nuisance alarms and other pitfalls in selected occupancies such as assembly, residential high-rise, and healthcare facilities. |
09.45 - 10.15 |
Majed Almejmaj, | Senior Fire Engineer - BuroHappold Engineering, - “Fire Alarm Recognition and Exit Choice in Underground Stations” Researchers have been collecting building evacuation data, especially pre-movement time, for various occupancies for the purpose of egress analysis studies. However, little effort has been exhorted in determining the effectiveness of the various types of fire alarms available in the market, especially with the increased use of open architecture assembly spaces. This study presentation focuses on occupants’ ability to recognize various alarm signals, most suitable alarm signal for underground stations, and how to increase occupant awareness of emergency exits. Keywords: Human Behavior, Human Factors, Egress, Exit Choice |
10.15 - 10.45 |
Aaron Vanney, Operations Manager | RJA - “Healthcare Fire Safety Aligned for Operations” Healthcare facilities require a unique approach to addressing Fire Safety needs of the building occupants who may not be capable of self-evacuation. The unique strategy relies on building systems and staff to safely care for the building occupants during a fire. However, it is not the intention for the Fire Strategy to prevent the care of patients during normal operations. This presentation will identify the unique Fire Safety approaches for Healthcare facilities and will identify fire safety features which may conflict with normal building operations. |

|
12.00 – 12.30 |
Altaf Afridi, Regional Director MENA | Dorma - “Aligning Safety, Security and Aesthetics in Architectural Openings” Architectural openings are more about Life Safety than egress and fire rating only. The automatic and manual revolving, sliding or swing door can be hazardous for users unless properly designed as per relative standards and codes. More so when we deal with frameless glass assemblies and the user group includes disabled, elderly people and children. Also, adding security hardware may cause safety issues for doors. While taking care of all these issues, the same doors are one of the main aesthetic items in architectural and interior design and a balance is always needed to align all these aspects. The presentation will focus on these points and will provide some case studies, how such challenges were resolved. |
12.30 - 13.00 |
Andy Dean, Head of Façades | WSP - “Façade Safety – Glass Selection” Glass selection is an extremely important phase of the design process. It is actually a combination and often a balance of performance characteristics. In this presentation we will address three of the most important aspects of glass selection – fire safety, breakage and solar performance. The intention is to provide the listener with some of the key requirements and also resources pursuant to assisting them in this regard. |
13.00 - 13.30 |
Jonathan J. Gonzalez, Project Engineer | UL – Underwriters Laboratories Middle East - “Importance of Conformity and Certification in Life Safety" Introduction to life safety for building materials and systems. The presentation will focus on understanding the stake holders in the built-environment, importance of conformity, certification regional best practices, learning lessons and life safety. |
